Pastor Gregory Says…

Gender Neutral BathroomYou might have noticed a small project of mine last week. The men’s restroom has been temporarily changed to a gender-neutral bathroom. As followers of Jesus we seek to be as welcoming and inclusive as possible, including transgender and gender nonconforming people. In light of our cultures disdain for queer sexualities this is a proactive attempt in creating safe spaces for anyone in need of sanctuary. Our church is also a widely used community center making it important to have bathroom facilities that are ADA-accessible and open to people of any gender.

Who benefits from gender-neutral bathrooms?

People who are uncomfortable in men’s or women’s rooms (including myself)

People with caregivers or personal attendants who are a different gender from them

Parents and caregivers whose small children are a different gender from them

Other people may also benefit specifically from single-occupancy bathrooms, such as people who are extremely introverted, people who are breastfeeding or have other needs for privacy, and so on.
