What a wonderful time we had in the park on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who worked to make the joint service and potluck a joyful experience. Chip worked overtime setting up, breaking down and ushering. Jan pulled together a good combined choir and played all the hymns. The Tongan Dancers, the drama (which included Pastor Gregory) and the powerful preaching were highlights of the day. Then there was a lot fabulous food and fellowship around the tables. Truly, we came together in “Unity with Purpose.”
This Sunday we will conclude our consideration of “Coming Home.” The key text is Psalm 84, a lovely hymn of pilgrimage that would have been sung as people made their way to the Temple for one of the yearly festivals. Even as the Temple comes into view in all its grandeur, the Psalmist sings, “Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even thine altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God.” This is a song of homecoming into the presence of the Living God, where God may be found in the majesty of the temple or in the simplicity of a swallow’s nest. It’s a great paradox that God is at “home” in either place. Wherever God is at home, we, God’s children, are welcomed there.
Remember that on Sunday, September 4, our worship will focus on songs and hymns of your choosing. Please write down your requests and email them or hand them to me so Jan and I can plan the service for that day. What are your favorites, songs we never sing any more, or ones you just can’t get enough of, or ones you just thought would fun or meaningful.
See you this Sunday at 10:00 AM for Worship and Sunday School. Plan to stay for Patio Hour, hosted by Chip and Charlie.
Together, let us strive…to know God’s love!
